Leila and Majnun is a classical Arabic story. It is based on the real story of a young man called Qays ibn al-Mulawwah from Najd (the northern Arabian Peninsula) during the Umayyad era in the 7th century. In one version, he spent his youth together with Leila, tending their flocks. In another version, upon seeing Leila he fell passionately in love with her. In both versions, however, he went mad when her father prevented him from marrying her; for that reason he came to be called Majnun meaning "madman."

Leila also refers to the tale of the Mistress of the Lions. The story of a fierce Moroccan female in the 8th Century who defeated a Lion in the desert after it ran after her. However it was said that the Lion was inhabited by the soul of her husband Hamza who had been killed in battle and she had in fact mistook the Lion's anger for excitment.
